Post Production

1. The Original Photo

So here is the original photo. I originally attempted to get both of us into the magazine, but it really wasn't working out so I decided to crop Josie out and have just me.

2. Adjusting Brightness, Contast & Levels
I started off by adjusting the brightness, contrast and levels to create this dark gothic image which really portrayed the genre/ theme of the trailer. It kept the trees at the top and darkened around the edges so you can only see my hands, mask and the baseball bat.

3. Adding the Title
So I had already created the title, and it was just the case off pasting it onto the magazine. I will show you how I made it later on in this post.

4. Adding a Banner
I added a banner at the bottom of the magazine, as I think it suits the magazine with this image. I also made sure it was the same red as in the title.

5. Adding a top Cover Line
It isn't a Empire cover without a cover line above the masthead, so I really needed one. I went with '30 Page Oscars Preview Inside' with some actors names underneath etc.

6. Adding the Masthead
I added the masthead, and after some feedback, I changed it from red to white. However, I now had a problem - My head was behind the masthead!
6. Fixing the problem and adding date/price
I had to go back to the original image, cut around my head/hood, paste it onto the magazine, resize it to the exact size as the image of the magazine, cut around the head on the new image and then copy and paste it as a new layer so that it would go over the top. Complicated right? I also added the date and price and 'The best movie magazine in the word' under the E/M

7. Adding a pug and more cover lines
With that minor problem sorted, it started feeling like a magazine. I added a pug, which I made sure was the blue pulled out of the strings on my hood and the extra cover lines. I decided to have these yellow and white and the linked to the mask. All the colours compliment each other.

8. Final touches
If you look at the title, there are some additional banners saying 'Exclusive' and a quote. My group may decide the don't like them, so we may need to do another feedback form to decide if we keep them or not.

Creating the Title

Originally we was thinking of having an American Street sign and calling the film 'The Lonely Rd', but it didn't look right, especially as it was set in the UK. I really didn't want to scrap the street sign idea, so I simply decided to type 'London Street Sign generator' and found a website. From there I typed in our film name, our slogan and we had a title made. Unfortunately there was no download option, so I had to screen Shot it and make it look as good as possible in Photoshop, but as you can see on the magazine cover it came out quite well.

Creating captions for the trailer

We wanted the same style of the Title for our captions, which meant I had to do the screen print process for every single word, which was a nightmare because once it was copied into Photoshop, each individual letter had to be selected with the magic wand tool. But it was worth as they came out really well and created a strong link between all the captions.

Starting off on the website, I would have to type in the actors name or which ever words I wanted and the press 'print screen' on the keyboard

Then I had to paste in  photoshop, cut it out so I was left with what I wanted, the select the magic wand tool and select each letter so I could move it to where I want on the screen and size to how big or small I wanted it.

Once I had done that for everything, I could piece it all together and end up with something like this. This was the longest process but well worth it as it makes some jumbled shots become a real trailer.

Poster Breakdown

So I took the same original photograph and put it through photoshop and changed the brightness, contrast and levels to create the dark, gothic effect.
Then I took the title, changed the colours to what we had decided and pasted it just below my hands holding the bat. Having the title below my hands fits the conventions of a poster.

Then I added the month of release...

Then I added my name. I didn't add it at the top as the white blended with the trees so I put it along the right hand side. After, I also added the warner brothers logo in the bottom right corner

Editing our trailer

As director of the film, Johnson had a very strong idea of how exactly he wanted the trailer to look. As a group, we spoke about what would be the best way to edit the shots that we had filmed. With the groups support, Johnson began to edit some of the shots that we had filmed.

As we wanted to create a dark and spooky feel to our trailer we wanted it to be relatively dark when we began filming. However by the time that we got Hainault Forest where the opening scene took place we would have ended up waiting about 2 hours for the perfect lighting and even when the perfect lighting did happen it would not last long enough for us to complete filming that scene. Therefore we decided that if we filmed in the day light during the evening it would be a lot easier to just put a filter on top to darken the images that we had.

However the only problem was that Johnson was not sure how to put a filter on a scene as this was quite an advanced editing technique and although we had all used Adobe premier pro for editing before we had not really done anything this advanced, therefore we decided to consult YouTube to find a tutorial on how to do it.

When editing we had to decide what shots were the most effective and what shots we should use to allow the trailer to flow fluently. As you can see the mask footage seen in the left of the screen shot was not used. This is because we made a group decision that with it in the film did not flow well and taking it out gave the film an over all much better feel. On the right hand side of the screen shot above you can also see a black title page with the words 'Directed By' on. We put these practice title pages in for two reasons. Firstly so we could get a feel for how the trailer would run with all of the title pages in while the real titles were getting made by another member of my team.  The second reason is to speed up finishing the final copy. As when the final title pages were made they could have just been replaced an the film would have been ready to go.

In this final screen shot it shows the final film complete with all of the title pages in. this screen shot you can see that the music has been added in, as well as a variety of different shot transitions to give it a trailer like films. By following the conventions of trailers it was relatively easy to create a piece of work that had a very strong trailer feel. Trailer conventions such as starting off slow and picking up the pace resulting in a climax which we had in our trailer as well as all of the title pages and where they are placed which follows the conventions of trailers.
